Stair Calculator
Calculate stair dimensions from total rise and run. Get number of steps, riser height, tread depth, and building code compliance.
Quick Answer
Divide total rise by desired riser height to get number of steps. IRC code: risers max 7.75", treads min 10". Ideal riser + tread = 17–18 inches for comfortable stairs.

About This Tool
The Stair Calculator helps you design code-compliant stairs by computing the optimal number of steps, riser height, and tread depth from your total rise and available run. It checks results against the International Residential Code (IRC) standards.
Key Building Code Requirements (IRC)
The IRC specifies maximum riser height of 7-3/4 inches and minimum tread depth of 10 inches. Stair width must be at least 36 inches. Headroom must be at least 6 feet 8 inches measured vertically from the tread nosing. The variation between the tallest and shortest riser cannot exceed 3/8 inch.
The Comfort Rule
The classic comfort rule states that riser height plus tread depth should equal 17 to 18 inches. This ratio produces stairs that feel natural to climb. Stairs outside this range feel either too steep or too shallow and can be a tripping hazard.
Measuring Total Rise
Total rise is the vertical distance from finished floor to finished floor. This includes the thickness of the upper floor structure and finish materials. Measure carefully — even a quarter-inch error divided across 14 risers creates noticeable unevenness.
Stair Angle Guidelines
Residential stairs typically fall between 30 and 37 degrees. Below 30 degrees feels like a ramp. Above 37 degrees starts to feel uncomfortably steep. Above 45 degrees is ladder territory. This calculator shows the angle so you can adjust rise and run to hit the sweet spot.
