Roofing Calculator

Calculate roof area, roofing squares, and shingle bundles needed. Select your roof pitch and waste factor for accurate material estimates.

Quick Answer

Roof Area = Footprint x Pitch Multiplier. Squares = Roof Area / 100. Bundles = Squares x 3. A 30x40 ft footprint with 6/12 pitch = 1,342 sq ft roof = 14.8 squares = 45 bundles of shingles (with 10% waste).

About This Tool

The Roofing Calculator converts your roof's footprint dimensions and pitch into the actual materials needed for a roofing project. Whether you are getting estimates from contractors or planning a DIY job, knowing the number of squares and bundles helps you budget accurately and verify contractor quotes.

Understanding Roof Pitch

Roof pitch is expressed as rise over run, typically rise per 12 inches of horizontal run. A 6/12 pitch means the roof rises 6 inches for every 12 inches of horizontal distance. This is a moderate pitch common on residential homes. The pitch multiplier converts flat footprint area to the actual surface area of the sloped roof.

Additional Materials to Consider

Beyond field shingles, a complete roofing job requires: underlayment (felt or synthetic), ice and water shield for eaves and valleys, drip edge flashing, ridge vent, ridge cap shingles, starter strip shingles, pipe boots, and nails. These can add 20-30% to the total material cost beyond shingle bundles alone.

Cost Estimation

Architectural shingles typically cost $30-50 per bundle or $90-150 per square for materials only. Professional installation adds $150-300 per square for labor. A 20-square roof might cost $1,800-3,000 for shingles alone or $5,000-9,000 fully installed. Premium materials like metal or slate cost significantly more.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is a unit of measurement equal to 100 square feet of roof area. Roofing materials, especially shingles, are priced and sold by the square. To find how many squares your roof is, divide the total roof area (adjusted for pitch) by 100. A 2,000 sq ft roof is 20 squares.
How many bundles of shingles per square?
Standard 3-tab shingles require 3 bundles per square. Architectural (dimensional) shingles also typically need 3 bundles per square, though heavier varieties may need 4-5 bundles. Always check the manufacturer's specifications on the bundle packaging for the exact coverage per bundle.
How does roof pitch affect materials needed?
Higher pitch means a steeper roof with more surface area than the footprint. A 4/12 pitch adds about 5.4% more area, while a 12/12 (45 degree) pitch adds 41.4% more area. The pitch multiplier converts flat footprint area to actual sloped roof area. Steeper roofs require more materials and are more expensive to install.
How do I measure roof pitch?
Place a level horizontally against the roof and measure 12 inches along it. Then measure the vertical rise from the end of the level to the roof surface. If the rise is 6 inches, your pitch is 6/12. You can also estimate from the ground using a pitch gauge app on your phone or by counting rows of shingles.
How much waste should I plan for?
Plan 10% waste for a simple gable roof with few penetrations. Add 15% for hip roofs, dormers, or multiple valleys. Complex roofs with many angles, skylights, and chimneys may need 15-20% waste. Ridge caps, starter strips, and hip/ridge shingles are additional materials not included in field shingle calculations.
