Wallpaper Calculator

Calculate how many rolls of wallpaper you need for any room, accounting for doors, windows, and pattern repeat.

Quick Answer

Measure your room perimeter (total wall length), multiply by wall height to get total square footage, subtract doors (~21 sq ft each) and windows (~12 sq ft each), then divide by the usable square footage per roll. Standard US rolls are 20.5" wide x 33 ft long, covering about 56 sq ft. Always buy 1-2 extra rolls.

About This Tool

Wallpaper transforms a room like few other design elements can, but ordering the wrong amount leads to either wasted money or a stressful mid-project shortage. This calculator accounts for the most common variables that affect coverage: room dimensions, doors and windows, roll specifications, and pattern repeat, which is the most commonly overlooked factor.

Understanding Pattern Repeat

Pattern repeat is the vertical distance between one point in a pattern and the identical point above it. A 21-inch repeat means you must align each strip so the pattern matches, creating waste at the top or bottom of each strip. Large pattern repeats (18-24 inches) can increase material needs by 15-25%. Solid or textured wallpapers with no pattern repeat are the most economical and easiest to install.

Standard Roll Sizes

In the US, a standard single roll is 20.5 inches wide by 33 feet long, covering approximately 56 square feet. A double roll (most common at retail) is 20.5 inches by 33 feet. European rolls are typically 21 inches wide by 33 feet. Some designer and grasscloth wallpapers come in 27-inch or 36-inch widths. Always check the roll dimensions on the product specifications, as there is significant variation between brands.

Tips for Ordering

Always buy all rolls from the same dye lot (batch number) to ensure consistent color. Order at least 1-2 extra rolls beyond what the calculator suggests for insurance against mistakes and future repairs. Many retailers accept returns of unopened rolls. If your room has unusual features like alcoves, sloped ceilings, or half-walls, measure those areas separately.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I wallpaper behind furniture?
Yes. You may rearrange furniture later, and gaps behind large pieces are visible if the furniture shifts. The only exception is built-in wardrobes or permanent fixtures that will never move. Always paper the full wall for a professional finish.
How much extra wallpaper should I order?
Order 10-15% extra for rooms with straight walls and no pattern, 15-20% for patterns with moderate repeat, and 20-25% for large pattern repeats or rooms with many corners, windows, and cutouts. Keep at least one unopened roll for future repairs.
What is the difference between single and double rolls?
A single roll covers about 28 sq ft, while a double roll covers about 56 sq ft. Most wallpaper is now sold in double rolls but may be priced per single roll, which can cause confusion. Always verify whether the price is per single or double roll.
Can I wallpaper over existing wallpaper?
It is possible but not recommended. Old wallpaper may have bubbles, seams, or adhesive issues that show through the new layer. The weight of two layers can cause both to peel. Best practice is to remove old wallpaper with a steamer or removal solution before applying new wallpaper.
How long does wallpaper last?
Quality wallpaper typically lasts 10-15 years with proper installation. Vinyl and coated wallpapers are most durable and washable. Grasscloth and natural fiber wallpapers are more delicate and may show wear after 5-8 years. Rooms with high humidity (bathrooms) may reduce wallpaper lifespan.
