VRAM Requirements Calculator
Estimate VRAM needed for your target resolution, graphics preset, and add-ons.
Quick Answer
VRAM requirements scale with resolution and graphics preset. Rough 2026 baselines: 1080p high needs 6-8 GB, 1440p high needs 10-12 GB, 4K high needs 14-16 GB. Add 2-4 GB for ray tracing, and another 4-8 GB for heavy texture mods. Always size up — you can't add VRAM later.

About the VRAM Requirements Calculator
Video RAM is the most underrated GPU spec for new builders. Two cards with identical compute can perform wildly differently if one runs out of VRAM and the other doesn't. Once VRAM fills, the GPU starts swapping data over PCIe to system RAM at 10-30x slower speeds, causing stutters, hitches, and FPS cliffs.
Resolution Drives VRAM Demand
Higher resolutions need bigger frame buffers. 1080p uses about 6 MB per frame buffer. 1440p uses 11 MB. 4K uses 33 MB. Multiply by the number of buffered frames, plus shadow maps, texture caches, and post-process buffers, and the math compounds.
Texture Quality Is the Real Killer
Within the same resolution, swapping from medium to ultra textures can double VRAM usage. A 1440p ultra setting in a modern AAA game easily uses 12+ GB of VRAM where the same scene at high uses 8 GB. The visual difference between high and ultra textures is often subtle — drop one notch to save several GB.
Ray Tracing and Path Tracing
Ray tracing adds bounding volume hierarchy structures to VRAM. Each tier of RT (RT shadows, RT reflections, RT global illumination) adds memory pressure. Full path tracing (Cyberpunk 2077's RT Overdrive mode, Alan Wake 2) can use 14-16 GB at 4K alone.
Mods Multiply Everything
Modded Skyrim with the full Beyond Skyrim suite, Cyberpunk with HD Reworked, or Stalker 2 with high-res texture packs can push VRAM consumption 50-100% above vanilla. If you mod heavily, size up. The RTX 4090's 24 GB exists for exactly this kind of load.

Future-Proofing
VRAM requirements have grown ~2 GB per year for AAA games. A card sized exactly to today's requirements will hit the VRAM wall in 12-18 months. If your build needs to last 3-4 years, target 50% more VRAM than today's recommendations. The RTX 4070 Super with 12 GB is borderline; the 4070 Ti Super or 5070 with 16 GB is comfortable.
