Quilt Calculator

Calculate fabric needed for your quilt by size, block size, and number of colors. Includes backing and binding.

Quick Answer

A twin quilt with 12" blocks in 3 colors needs about 12-15 yards of 42" fabric total (blocks + sashing + backing + binding). Queen and king quilts need 18-25+ yards.

About This Tool

The Quilt Calculator helps you figure out exactly how much fabric to buy before starting your quilt project. It accounts for block fabric, sashing, backing, and binding, then breaks it down by color so you can shop with confidence.

Choosing Block Size

Larger blocks (10-12") mean fewer blocks to sew and faster assembly. Smaller blocks (4-6") create more intricate designs but require more piecing. The block size also affects your cutting layout and fabric efficiency.

Backing Considerations

Standard quilting cotton is 42-44" wide, so any quilt wider than that needs a pieced backing. You can use wider backing fabric (108") to avoid seams, but the selection is more limited. Our calculator assumes standard 42" fabric with panels.

Frequently Asked Questions

How much fabric do I need for a queen size quilt?
A queen quilt (86x96") with 12" blocks needs about 7-9 yards of block fabric total (divided among your colors), plus 6 yards for backing and 0.75 yards for binding. With sashing, add 2-3 more yards. Total is typically 16-19 yards of 42" fabric.
What is sashing on a quilt?
Sashing is the fabric strips sewn between quilt blocks. It frames each block, adds visual separation, and increases the overall quilt size without making more blocks. Common sashing widths are 1.5-3 inches finished.
How much backing fabric do I need?
Backing should be 4-8 inches larger than the quilt top on all sides. For quilts wider than the fabric (42"), you'll need multiple panels sewn together. A queen quilt typically needs 6-8 yards of backing fabric.
How much binding do I need?
Binding strips are cut 2.5" wide and joined to wrap around the quilt edges. You need enough strips to go around the entire perimeter plus 10-20" for joining. Most quilts need 0.5-0.75 yards for binding.
Should I prewash quilting fabric?
Opinions vary. Prewashing prevents shrinkage and bleeding after the quilt is finished but can fray edges and remove the sizing that makes cutting easier. If you prewash, buy 5-10% extra to account for shrinkage. Many modern quilters skip prewashing and use color catchers on the first wash.
