About This Tool
The Garage Door Size Calculator recommends the right door dimensions based on your vehicles. It accounts for standard clearance requirements so you can open doors, load cargo, and walk around your vehicle comfortably.
Standard Garage Door Sizes
Single-car garage doors come in 8-foot and 9-foot widths. Double-car doors are typically 16 feet wide. Standard height is 7 feet, though 8-foot tall doors are increasingly popular for trucks and SUVs. Some RV garages need 10–12 foot tall doors.
Clearance Requirements
Plan for at least 12 inches of clearance on each side of the vehicle and 6–12 inches above. Side clearance lets you open doors without hitting walls. Overhead clearance prevents antenna or rack damage. More clearance makes daily use much more comfortable.
Two-Car vs. Single-Car Doors
A two-car garage can use either one wide door (16 ft) or two single doors (8–9 ft each). Two single doors cost more but allow independent operation and provide a structural pillar between openings. One wide door gives maximum flexibility for vehicle arrangement.
Insulation and R-Value
Insulated garage doors (R-12 to R-18) reduce energy costs if the garage is attached to the house or used as a workshop. Steel with polyurethane insulation offers the best R-value per inch. Uninsulated doors are fine for detached garages in mild climates.
