College GPA Calculator
Calculate your semester and cumulative GPA across multiple semesters. Add courses with credit hours and letter grades.
Quick Answer
GPA = Total Quality Points / Total Credit Hours. Quality points = Grade Points x Credits. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit course = 12.0 quality points. Sum across all courses and divide by total credits.

About This Tool
The College GPA Calculator computes both semester and cumulative grade point averages across multiple semesters of coursework. It uses the standard 4.0 scale with plus/minus support, accepts credit hour values, and handles prior GPA from transfer credits or earlier semesters you do not want to re-enter individually.
GPA matters for scholarship eligibility, graduate school admissions, honors designations, and job applications. Knowing exactly where you stand helps you make informed decisions about course load, withdrawal deadlines, and how much effort to put into a given class. This calculator puts that information at your fingertips.
How GPA Is Calculated
Each letter grade maps to a number of grade points: A = 4.0, B = 3.0, C = 2.0, D = 1.0, F = 0.0. Plus modifiers add 0.3 (B+ = 3.3) and minus modifiers subtract 0.3 (B- = 2.7). The exception is A+, which is still 4.0 at most institutions.
For each course, quality points are calculated by multiplying grade points by credit hours. A B+ (3.3) in a 4-credit course yields 13.2 quality points. Your GPA is the sum of all quality points divided by the sum of all credit hours. This weighting means a 4-credit class has more impact on your GPA than a 1-credit class.
Semester vs. Cumulative
Semester GPA considers only the courses in one term. Cumulative GPA spans your entire academic record. The calculator shows both. If you have prior credits (from earlier semesters or transfer institutions), enter those in the optional section at the top so the cumulative figure is accurate.
Working with Multiple Semesters
Click “Add Semester” to create additional terms. Each semester has its own course list. You can rename semesters (e.g., “Fall 2025”, “Spring 2026”) for easy reference. Remove semesters you no longer need. The cumulative GPA updates in real time as you add or modify courses.
Common GPA Benchmarks
A 3.0 GPA is generally considered the threshold for “good academic standing” at most universities. Honors societies like Phi Beta Kappa typically require a 3.5 or higher. Medical schools expect 3.7+. Law schools vary widely. Many employers use 3.0 as a resume screening cutoff, though this is increasingly less common. Knowing these benchmarks helps you set realistic goals.
