Platform Character Limits

Different platforms enforce different character limits. Twitter/X limits tweets to 280 characters. SMS messages are constrained to 160 characters per segment (longer messages are split into multiple segments). Google typically shows 150-160 characters of meta descriptions in search results. Instagram bios are capped at 150 characters. The visual progress bars help you stay within these limits at a glance.

Reading and Speaking Time

The average adult reads silently at approximately 250 words per minute, while the average conversational speaking pace is about 150 words per minute. These estimates help content creators gauge how long an article, blog post, or script will take to consume. Presentations and speeches typically run at 100-130 words per minute to allow for pauses and emphasis.

Characters vs. Characters Without Spaces

Some platforms and academic requirements count all characters including spaces, while others only count non-whitespace characters. For example, Twitter counts spaces toward the 280-character limit. Some translation services charge per character without spaces. This tool shows both counts so you always know exactly where you stand regardless of the counting method required.
